Tarjeta de identidad de extranjero (TIE card)
The new card is called the Tarjeta de identidad de extranjero or TIE card. It was introduced on 6 July 2020, by the Spanish Government. It is for British Citizens wanting to secure their residency in Spain under the Withdrawal Agreement. Anyone registering their residency in Spain will now be issued with this new card rather than the older green documentation. There is no difference in the rights afforded the holder. But the new card is a biometric card, with a photo and is a more secure form of identification.
The Spanish government is advising British residents to exchange their green residency paperwork for a TIE card. While this is not compulsory yet, the messaging to switch is getting stronger from the authorities. We are seeing more expats heed the advice and switch to the TIE card.
Let us help with your TIE application
You can make the application yourself if you are confident about the documents that need submitting and attending the appointment at the police station to submit the documents and your fingerprints. Alternatively we have a fixed price TIE application service. We:
- Check through with you all of the documents that need to be submitted with the application so that they are all in order, minimising the chances of a rejected application.
- We will book the police station appointment and accompany you to the meeting where you submit the TIE application and your fingerprints.
- We will also book the appointment for you to collect your TIE if it is required in your province.
There is information on the UK Government website about Registering your residency
The Spanish authorities recommend changing the green card to the biometric TIE card although at the moment (May 2021) it is not mandatory.
